About Read With Me

The Read With Me committee dedicated to improving literacy of preschool children.  We help parents and caretakers realize that it is more about reading with your child than reciting words on a page.  Literacy starts with interaction from parents with their child, like asking questions and encouraging children to expand their vocabulary and knowledge through simple everyday tasks.

Each month Junior League members visit Head Start classrooms.  Using the big book from the class curriculum, we read with classrooms full of kids and encourage them to do the same with their families at home.  At the end of each reading session, children are given a simple book, crayons and bookmark for parents and caretakers to continue reading with at home.

In addition to reading with children in Head Start, the Read With Me committee is preparing to start a Reading Camp in the summer of 2013.  This camp will target children who need help with their reading skills.  We are currently in the early planning stages and will update the website when we have more information.

Reading is fundamental.  The Junior League's RWM committee hopes to give children a head start on their reading skills by encouraging reading at home with their families.
